Just Keep Your Eye On The Prize

The draft about my trip to Italy is still in the works, and will be published once it is complete and to my liking. Please bare with me, as I have had a very busy past two weeks with flying home to Chicago, flying to Tucson soon after to begin my summer internship, and then flying back to Chicago this weekend to tend to family matters. However, I have not forgotten about my Italy entry, so do not fret! I appreciate your patience with me.

In regards to my last entry, jet lag was a killer. My body was confused for three days after returning to Chicago. I would take long naps in the late afternoon out of necessity. I recommend thinking about and preparing for jetlag both on your flights to and from overseas destinations.

As for right now, if you have any questions for me about studying abroad (especially in London or even about my London program), feel free to comment and ask me. I will address them as best and detailed as I can.

  1. Hey, I read your blog and its really good. I'm a student at villanova and I'm going to City University next semester. I was just wandering how is the workload in comparison to the amount of work you get back home? Also, do you know anything about how the normal school housing works? I'm going through direct enrollment rather than a program provider which means I live in the normal student housing how ever it works.

    Thanks a lot,
    Mike

  2. Hey! I'll just comment here so if anyone else is curious they can read as well.

In regards to the work load, I would not say it was more difficult than at Indiana University, but I felt it was different in most respects. I am used to having all of my classes be a five minute walk from my house and being tested primarily (if not completely) by multiple choice quizzes and exams. However, in England, every assessment is an essay. It really threw me for a loop. With that, professors are a lot more open to students submitting essay drafts for feedback at City than at Indiana. If you become unclear or worried about an essay you are supposed to submit, I recommend sending it via email to your professor to look it over before the due date. But at first ask politely if they are OK with reading it, don't just assume they will.

Something to keep in mind, though, is that I only took one official City University course and two Arcadia University courses that were taught at a City University location. I found the Arcadia courses more demanding than the City course, even though I was taking a third year class at City. I felt The Arcadia ones just covered more material. I would guess that the work load would be less demanding than at Villanova during most weeks (not finals), but you shouldn't forget that you'll be distracted by travelling much more than you are when you are at school in America. Juggling sightseeing is what makes the work load the most difficult to manage.

Three random things to say about City: their library sucks compared to libraries at American Universities, their student union is nice to go to between classes and get cheap food, and students talk to eachother while the teacher is talking way more than in America. It's incredibly distacting and rude to the teacher, so if you sit towards the front and pay attention, you will a.) be able to hear what he/she says and b.) they will recognize you as a dedicated student.

As for City University housing, I can't really help you out there unfortunately. I never met a peer who lived in City housing, and I actually lived in Arcadia Housing in Notting Hill (an hour commute from City).

Also...make sure you go to the restaurant called Tortilla across from the Angel tube stop if you are missing/craving Chipotle burritos. Good luck and have fun in London!
